This documentary offers a real-world glimpse into the true identity of a North Korean refugee and her attempts to reconnect with society.
“I Am Grace” brings to life the inspirational journey of Grace Jo, a North Korean defector who is attempting to rebuild her life in the U.S. Grace Jo had humble beginnings. She was born in North Korea, where she nearly starved to death as a child. She survived two unsuccessful attempts at escaping, where she was exiled back to North Korea by the oppressive Chinese government and suffered imprisonment and servitude.
Finally, in 2008, she was able to finally succeed, and the UNHCR rescued Grace Jo from China with the help of Pastor Philip Buck. Together with this help, Grace was allowed to enter the U.S. as a legal refugee, and in 2013, she became a U.S. citizen.
This short and impactful documentary takes the viewer through some of the challenges that Grace Jo has had to face in her life. It also offers a new perspective on some of the adjustments that must take place in order for life to begin again. By journeying through the daily world from Grace’s perspective, viewers can dismiss any misunderstandings or preconceived notions that they may have about what a defector truly is.
A defector, Grace Jo, is just a person who is seeking their freedom. These are the qualities and ideals that Grace Jo epitomizes as she adapts to her new life in the U.S. and as she visits Korea. Just like any other refugee, immigrant, or U.S. citizen, Grace Jo has the right to pursue happiness and freedom and strive for a better life through hard work and ambition. In essence, “I Am Grace” is a story about all of us.
